Take a calm and methodical approach to activities, and sit down and rest for a few moments or practice a breathing technique when you need to.
Think about which tasks are essential and which could be left for another day so that you have more energy to do something that gives you pleasure. Try the Trade-Offs Suitcase activity if you need help with this.
Do activities slowly so you exert less energy. And why not get organized and put items that you need in a place that’s easy to reach to prevent you from going to and fro?
When you’re doing the laundry, spending time in the garden or doing anything that requires lifting, use a trolley with wheels to take the weight. You could also ask for help moving things around in your house so that you won’t need to climb stairs and reach quite so often.
There’s no need to make any unnecessary trips to the mall. You can go online for most things, from groceries to managing your banking. That way the energy you save can be used for the things you love, like seeing friends or spending time outdoors.
Try the pursed-lips technique. Take a slow, gentle breath through your nostrils, and then slowly and softly breathe out through pursed lips, as if you’re whistling or blowing a candle out. Practice this as often as you can, and when you’re finding breathing difficult.
