Using Your SYMBICORT Inhaler

Preparing your inhaler

  1. Take your SYMBICORT inhaler out of the foil pouch.
  2. If using the inhaler for the first time, or if you haven’t used it in more than 7 days, shake it well for 5 seconds—then release a test spray. (Be sure to direct the inhaler away from your face.)
  3. Shake it again and release a second test spray.

How to use your SYMBICORT inhaler

Using your inhaler

  1. SHAKE WELL for 5 seconds.
  2. Exhale fully, then insert the mouthpiece and inhale deeply and slowly while pressing down firmly on the top.
  3. While holding your breath, for 10 seconds or as long as comfortable, release the top and remove the inhaler.

Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 for your second puff.

After using your SYMBICORT inhaler, put the cover back on the mouthpiece. Rinse your mouth with water and spit. Do not swallow the water.

Reading the actuation counter

Reading the actuation counter

The counter for your SYMBICORT inhaler is attached to the top of the metal canister. The arrow points to the number of inhalations, or puffs, remaining. After you have primed the inhaler for the first time, the counter will read 120 for a filled prescription, or 60 for an institutional or sample pack.

Each time you release a puff from the inhaler, the counter will count down by one. Please note the arrow does not noticeably reflect each actuation.

When the arrow approaches 20, the counter will reach the beginning of the yellow zone. This indicates it is time to call for a refill. Discard the inhaler when the arrow reaches the red zone and reads 0. Your inhaler may not feel empty and may continue to operate, but you will not get the right amount of asthma medication if you keep using it.
